What to Wear on a Hawaiian Vacation

If you follow my Instagram account (ObsessionsofaFashionNerd), you know I just spent 10 days back home in Hawaii. I was very lucky to spend time growing up there and I try to make it back at least once a year. This year I went to my home island of Oahu, but also got to check something off my bucket list and visit the Big Island or Hawai'i. Just like every year when I go home, I struggled figure out what to pack. It surely cannot be as hard as I always make it, right? I decided to talk about how to pack for a tropical vacation just in case there are any other people out there who need a little help.

One of the things I always struggle with as a blogger is what to pack. I believe in capturing every moment of your life possible. This is not a vanity thing; simply put, I want to have tangible evidence of a life well lived. That is why I also print out my pictures and put them in albums. So when I am packing I want to make sure that my outfits can cover a broad range of events, are going to photograph well, and maintain my level of comfort. When I go home to Hawaii, there is a fourth thing to consider: Island Style.

Island Style is the way locals in Hawai'i dress, which is both effortless and simple. This may be why I struggle when I am packing -- I like layers, depth, and outfits that have multiple facets.  Locals back home are much more laid back. They add depth through print and color, but keep the number of components in their outfits relatively low. For this reason, when I go there, I tend to pack many one piece outfits or dresses. I try to add interest through things like bold colors, embroidery, or different necklines. The Alice & You dress pictured here is relatively simple, but it has embroidery on the neckline and throughout the dress as well as a keyhole detail in the back. These details allow me to remain true to my style, while being able to still blend in.

"Feels like I just woke up
Like all this time I've been asleep
Even though it's not who I am
I'm not afraid of who I used to be

No one stays the same (oh, oh)
You know what goes up must come down (oh, oh)
Change is a thing you can count on (oh, oh)
I feel so much younger now (oh, oh)

Feels like I've been living in a dream
But never make it to the end
My eyes open when they feel the light."
